Newcastle evening headlines with Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin update amid Howe's Toney response

Eddie Howe has refused to give much away when asked about the potential return of Bruno Guimaraes, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson. Elsewhere, the Magpies boss was asked about former striker Ivan Toney following his maiden England call-up.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for September 16.

Injury latest

Eddie Howe says that Allan Saint-Maximin, Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson are all still touch and go for the clash against AFC Bournemouth.

None of the trio have been spotted training so far this week but it is understood that Bruno is feeling "better" after picking up a hamstring injury away to Tranmere in the League Cup.

Howe said: "Everybody has improved. But I will leave my team news to the time we get it. It has been a slightly difficult period but hopefully we care coming out of that. They are big players we need them back in the team."

Bruno's Brazil call-up

Bruno Guimaraes will be allowed to link up with Brazil for their World Cup warm-up games against Ghana and Tunisia - regardless of whether he plays or not against AFC Bournemouth.

This will be the last fixture in the Premier League before the final international break ahead of the World Cup, and Bruno is expected to be a big part of Seleção's plans in Qatar.

The games take place in France, with the Ghana clash in La Havre and the Tunisia encounter in Paris, meaning Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is relaxed about the short distance for Bruno to travel during the international break. International rules mean that Brazil are permitted to let their own doctors assess any injury concerns on their players.

Shelvey progress

Jonjo Shelvey is making good progress after picking up a calf injury in pre-season during the 3-2 friendly defeat in Lisbon against Benfica.

The Newcastle United midfielder was in a tip-top shape in the summer before being dealt a cruel blow at the Stadium of Light in Portugal. However, the good news for Shelvey is his return could be sooner than expected.

A calf operation in August followed with club medics suggestion he could be out for 12 weeks. But with Eddie Howe naming Shelvey in his 25-man squad for the first half of the season, an autumn return looks a possibility.

Toney response

Eddie Howe would 'love' to think that an 'outstanding' player like Ivan Toney would not have to leave Newcastle United today to become an England international.

Toney felt former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez did not trust him so the striker moved to Peterborough United in 2018 following a series of loan spells away from St James' Park. Benitez always maintained that 'nobody' at the club told him Toney was an 'option' in the loan reports he received and, perhaps, not even the striker could have predicted what happened next.

'Key stage'

Eddie Howe has underlined the importance of heading off into an international break on the back of a Premier League win.

The Magpies have not triumphed since the opening day of the season against Nottingham Forest in the top-flight and will not play again until October 1 away to Fulham ahead of the final international fixtures before the World Cup. Having played three away games in seven days then a home game against Crystal Palace, United have now had a two-week break following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Howe said: "It's a key stage, because we've gone from a period where we had game after game in a really short period of time, and how with the break last week we'll have one game in four weeks. So that one game you have in that spell, you want it to be a good one.

Foster on Ashworth

Ben Foster was full of praise for the way Dan Ashworth handled himself as the former Watford goalkeeper broke the news he would not be signing for the club. Newcastle were in the market for a back-up goalkeeper after Karl Darlow was injured in training - with Loris Karius later coming in.

However, 39-year-old Foster claims to have agreed terms with the Magpies, but would have found it tough to move away from his family at that stage of his career. Having already informed his agent of his decision to turn down a move, Foster called Ashworth, with whom he'd worked with at West Bromwich Albion.
