Newcastle evening headlines with Bruno's admission and Wilson's World Cup cameo

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for November 21.

Trippier feature

Kieran Trippier did not think he would win a single cap for England once upon a time - let alone play in three successive major tournaments. However, the Newcastle United defender will surely be one of the first names on Gareth Southgate's team sheet once again when the Three Lions face Iran in their World Cup opener on Monday.

Trippier has long earned Southgate's trust as the England boss' go-to big-game player, whether it is the opening game of the group stage, a World Cup semi-final or, even, the final of the European Championships. This tournament will be no different, particularly with the form the right-back is in.

When it comes to successful crosses, passes into the final third, chances created and chances created from set-pieces, Trippier ranks among the very best in the Premier League and not just for defenders. No wonder Trippier has vowed not to let anyone tell him when his time is up - the 32-year-old is coming into his prime.

Trippier has also made real strides defensively, following a title-winning spell at Atletico Madrid, and the England international has clearly looked after himself to thrive as a modern day full-back under Eddie Howe. It goes without saying that much has changed since the pair last worked together at Burnley when Trippier and former team-mate David Edgar loved a night out.

Pickford's SJP 'abuse'

Jordan Pickford will have been keen to give Newcastle United fans 'two fingers' following his latest St James' Park appearance. That is the view of Sunderland legend Kevin Ball, who was in the stands for the Magpies' recent victory over Everton where Pickford was once again the target for taunts.

England's number one has become a pantomime villain on each visit to St James' Park since completing his move to Everton in 2017 following the Black Cats' relegation. The 28-year-old has been mocked with inflatable dinosaurs in recent years, with certain supporters going as far as dressing up in T-Rex costumes.

Pickford has previously revelled in the back-and-forth with the crowd, although this backfired when Rafa Benitez's side secured a comeback 3-2 victory in March 2019. The goalkeeper's last visit finished in a narrow defeat for the Toffees, with Miguel Almiron scoring the only goal of the game last month.

Ball worked with Pickford during his time in Sunderland's academy, and was in attendance for the latest St James' Park encounter. The former club ambassador was 'unbelievably proud' of how the goalkeeper handled the 'abuse'.

Wilson assist

England and Newcastle United supporters have come together in unison with praise for Callum Wilson after his part in the Three Lions' sixth goal. The Magpies striker was played through on goal, one on one with Hossein Hosseini, but opted to roll the ball across to Jack Grealish who fired the ball into the back of the net.

Gareth Southgate's side ran riot against the side ranked 20th in world football. It's only the second time in World Cup history that England has scored more than five goals. Wilson came on as a second-half substitute to replace Harry Kane, but at one point it looked as though his opportunity had gone begging.

The Newcastle number nine was kitted and ready to come on, but Harry Maguire took a knock to the head. The Manchester United defender was replaced by Eric Dier as a precaution, with Southgate sending Wilson back to the bench.

Bruno's Newcastle role

Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes believes Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are utilising his skillset better than his former club Lyon did. Since his arrival in January, Guimaraes has had a transformative effect upon Newcastle's performances on the pitch.

While true Howe and the rest of the Magpies squad deserve masses of credit for their 2022 calendar results, there's no doubt that Guimaraes is the player who makes Newcastle tick.

The Brazilian international is the heartbeat of Howe's Newcastle, serving as their chief creator. During his time in Ligue 1, Lyon utilised Guimaraes as more of a ball winner than a progressive passer.

However, the Brazilian has flourished in a more advanced role, adding goals to his game as well. In 31 appearances for Newcastle, Guimaraes has found the back of the net eight times. He only managed to bag three goals in 71 appearances for Lyon.

And the all-action role is one the 25-year-old feels suits his game better than how he was deployed by his former side.

Barton's Anderson comparison

Bristol Rovers boss Joey Barton has compared Scott Sinclair's recent performances to that of Newcastle United's Elliot Anderson, who spent half of last term at the Memorial Stadium.

Anderson shone for Barton and Rovers during his loan spell, helping the Gas to an unlikely final day promotion from League Two when they managed to beat Scunthorpe United 7-0 to go up on goal difference.

It was the 20-year-old Geordie who bagged the seventh and final goal to put Barton and co into the automatic places at Northampton Town's expense.
