Newcastle evening headlines with Bruno and Saint-Maximin latest and Howe on no transfer 'favours'

Here are the latest Newcastle United headlines for September 2.

Howe's transfer verdict

Eddie Howe says he knew Newcastle United's incoming business was completed with four hours to spare in the summer transfer window.

A deal for Harrison Ashby did not go through because demands and assurances from West Ham proved too much. But Howe was still delighted with work in the window this year.

No favours

Eddie Howe has admitted that the 'narrative' around Newcastle United has changed after Premier League rivals put up the asking prices for players and his side were booed off the field at Anfield.

Although Newcastle did sign Matt Targett from Aston Villa, and Nick Pope from relegated Burnley, the Magpies were unable to land a number of other targets with top-flight experience. Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers, for instance, quipped £40m 'might just cover three-quarters' of James Maddison's left leg while, similarly, Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear said one offer the club received for Jack Harrison would only be enough for his right leg,

Newcastle also did not have any joy in bringing in players on loan from other Premier League clubs, like they have in the past, which perhaps shows how Howe's side are now perceived as they bid to upset the established order.

Injury latest

Eddie Howe has suggested that Allan Saint-Maximin is touch and go for the home clash with Crystal Palace this weekend.

The French winger sustained a hamstring injury on a defensive recovery sprint away to Wolves in the 1-1 draw last Sunday and subsequently missed the trip to Anfield in midweek for the agonising 2-1 defeat. But Howe has stated the former Nice man's injury is not serious.

Nevertheless, he will need late fitness checks before a decision is made. Both Ryan Fraser and Jacob Murphy are standing by as back-up.

Trippier on SJP

Kieran Trippier says there is nothing for Newcastle United to bounce back from ahead of the clash against Crystal Palace.

The Eagles head to Tyneside after a mixed bag of results in the first five games with five points picked up so far. Even a last gasp win for Liverpool could not dampen Trippier's spirits ahead of another big clash.

Trippier told Chronicle Live: "We're back in our house now and Palace are on a good run so we need to respect them, no matter who we play. But make no mistake we'll be ready, we'll recover now and take a lot of positives from the game."

Academy stance

Newcastle United rejected multiple loan offers for under-21 talent over the summer as they look to improve the club's youth setup. The Magpies have been plagued with underachieving reserve and academy sides in recent years but have bolstered their ranks in recent months with some top class teenage additions.

Newcastle are hoping to build a strong base of young talent and keep them at the club, allowing them to follow a pathway to the first-team. The likes of Jay Turner-Cooke, Matty Bondswell and Michael Ndiweni are players who attracted interest in England's lower leagues and in other countries over the summer.

In the senior side, Elliot Anderson's impressive performances in pre-season saw Eddie Howe keep the 19-year-old at Newcastle, despite over a dozen clubs eyeing his signature.

Jordan impressed

Simon Jordan admits Newcastle United’s start to the season has changed his perspective on their prospects under Eddie Howe.

The talkSPORT pundit previously predicted that it would take Newcastle two or three years until they get ‘anywhere near the top six’.

The Magpies have lost just one of their opening five Premier League games (W1 D3) and also produced a thrilling 3-3 draw against reigning champions Manchester City.

Jordan has also been vocal regarding Newcastle’s takeover in October 2021 – claiming that the ‘morality ship has sailed’ in the Premier League. Although the former Crystal Palace owner still stands by his statements on the Magpies' owners, he does admit that Eddie Howe is building a side which is ready to compete in the top-flight.
