Newcastle evening headlines with Ashworth on transfer standby and Gordon's Tonali verdict

Here are your latest Newcastle United headlines for July 2.

Transfer latest

Newcastle United chiefs are calm and composed when it comes to early business in this summer's transfer window.

United fans have watched on as Tottenham Hotspur swooped for James Maddison last week and Liverpool closed in on Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig. However, while both players were on Newcastle's shortlist neither player was seen as a 'be-all and end-all' signing with other exciting targets on Eddie Howe's wish-list.

Having put the groundwork in on midfielder Sandro Tonali and landing Gambian winger Yankuba Minteh earlier in the window, Newcastle's recruitment team are happy with business so far. But the feeling from within is that there is more business to follow in the coming weeks and months.

Work has already started on nailing down targets for the next couple of windows before this summer's trading period has even finished too. Newcastle feel there are plenty of options in the remainder of the window in which a new striker, centre-back and full-back can be added to an already impressive squad.

Ideally, Howe would like at least a couple of new players on board for the start of pre-season training but Newcastle are carefully plotting their way through business. Sporting director Dan Ashworth and head of recruitment Steve Nickson are essentially on standby.

Gordon on Tonali

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon believes the Magpies have made a statement signing by securing AC Milan star Sandro Tonali. The Italian midfielder is poised to complete his Tyneside switch in the coming days after agreeing a six-year deal at St James' Park.

Tonali's Italy U21 side suffered a shock group stage exit at the European Championships last week, accelerating the player's Newcastle transfer. Gordon remains with England U21s as Lee Carsley's men go deep in the competition.

Speaking on international duty, the Newcastle forward was quizzed over the impending arrival of Tonali and admits a deal of this magnitude shows the direction Eddie Howe's side are travelling.

Carrasco's future

Newcastle United are believed to have been suggested in conversation via an intermediary as a possible destination for unsettled Belgium international Yannick Carrasco.

A report in Mundo Deportivo last week linked the 29-year-old with Barcelona with the former Monaco star also said to be offered around a clutch of clubs in Europe - including Newcastle - for a fee of just £16.3million. It is understood that the clause to buy Carrasco from Atletico Madrid for that fee has now passed.

Since then Carrasco's agent Pini Zahavi has been looking at possible options for the winger in the summer window. Atletico used Carrasco regularly last season and the suggestion from sources at the Metropolitano Stadium is that they would like to keep the winger.

Although, Carrasco has just one year left on his deal and it is little wonder that his representatives are testing the market. Chronicle Live understands that Atletico would not stand in Carrasco's way if he could find a club this summer.

Albert on Tonali

Sandro Tonali is taking a 'step backwards' by swapping AC Milan for Newcastle United ahead of his impending transfer worth at least £55 million. That is according to former Magpies defender Phillipe Albert, who admits the switch to St James' Park to play in the Premier League is a 'step forward' for the Italy international.

Tonali is expected to complete his move to Newcastle in the coming days, having already agreed terms on a six-year contract. The Serie A winner will provide Eddie Howe new options in midfield, not least the opportunity to potentially push Bruno Guimaraes further forward.

News of Tonali's transfer caused a stir in Italy, with national team boss Roberto Mancini suggesting it was a 'problem' to see the country's top talents move abroad. However, like Albert, the ex-Manchester City boss accepted the standard of the Premier League would boost the midfielder's own development.
