Newcastle council tax bill rises and how much you'll pay if 2023/2024 budget is approved

Newcastle City Council has launched a consultation on its proposed budget for 2023/2024.

The council says the challenge of setting a balanced budget has been getting harder and harder since austerity cuts struck in 2010. Next year, the city authority says it has to make £23.2 million of savings.

The proposals were discussed at a full council meeting on Monday November 22, where they were met with backlash from residents who accused the local authority of doing the Tory Government's 'dirty work' by imposing further cuts while planning to increase the council tax burden residents pay.

In a statement, council leader Nick Kemp, said the cuts and proposed tax rises are unavoidable.

He said: “The increasing financial pressure on councils everywhere means that inevitably, our budgets cannot stretch as far as we would wish. We have taken every step to mitigate the impact of government cuts on our residents, and we are absolutely focused on supporting people and businesses in Newcastle to get through the cost-of-living crisis."

The proposed budget includes council tax and social care precept rises for residents. If approved, council tax will rise by 1.99% and the adult social care precept payment by 1%. This would generate £5m of income for the cash strapped council.

A seven-week public consultation on the proposed budget launched today. It will run until January 11, 2023.
