Newcastle could buy 10 players on January deadline day as Eddie Howe eyes attacking trio

The January transfer window was always going to be a busy time for Newcastle United – and they haven’t disappointed with their ambition this month.

Newcastle’s long-awaited takeover by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and the club’s perilous position meant the Magpies were poised to splash the cash.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have already come through the door at St James’ Park and they were joined on Sunday by Bruno Guimaraes, who joined the Magpies in a £35million move from Lyon.

"We are hopeful of getting closer to completing a transfer for a player," Eddie Howe said at a news conference in Saudi Arabia on Friday, referring to Guimaraes.

"From my perspective, I don't imagine that would be the end. Whether that turns into reality, who knows.

"Things change very late in this window as everybody knows, it can be quite unpredictable in the last couple of days, with lots of things maybe happening that we didn't expect.”

Howe says the transfer window is unpredictable, but here is Mirror Football’s best attempt at summing up the potential arrivals on Tyneside on the final day of the window.

Dan Burn

Howe wants to bolster Newcastle’s defence and the club have already had a £7m bid rejected by Brighton for Burn.

However, they returned on Sunday with a bid of £12.5m, which was enough to get the deal across the line, according to The Guardian. He is expected to be officially announced on Monday before the deadline.

The 29-year-old is a boyhood Toon fan, having been born in Blyth, Northumberland, and Newcastle are keen to sign him because he can sign left-back and centre-back.

Nat Phillips

Newcastle have been trying very hard to sign a centre-back this month. So far they have failed, with Sevilla’s Diego Carlos and Lille’s Sven Botman unattainable.

The Athletic says that Tottenham ’s Joe Rodon and West Ham ’s Issa Diop have been shortlisted as other options, but that Liverpool ’s Phillips is the most likely of the three.

Liverpool are happy to sell, but only for the right price. They have already rejected a £7m bid from Watford and have interest from other Premier League sides.

Jesse Lingard

Lingard’s situation is a complicated one. He wants to leave Manchester United and has received permission to do so from Ralf Rangnick .

Newcastle have held talks with United, but their demands are causing problems . United reportedly want a loan fee, Lingard’s wages paid in full and a bonus clause included if the club avoid relegation from the Premier League.

That would add up to £15million – a total Newcastle are not willing to pay. However, with the clock ticking a deal may still be struck.

Aaron Ramsey

Juventus want to get Ramsey off their wage bill this month, but so far the Wales midfielder has failed to find a new home.

Juve still want to find a solution, but Gazzetta dello Sport say Ramsey has turned down several approaches in January.

Burnley are keen on the 31-year-old midfielder, while Newcastle have also been mentioned on plenty of occasions too. If they can’t sign Lingard, then Ramsey is a viable alternative.

Duvan Zapata

They may have already signed Wood this month, but Newcastle still want another forward.

Steve Nickson, the head of recruitment, is known to be a fan of the Atalanta striker – although the Colombian striker might be a tough target to get over the line in the final days of the window.

Eddie Nketiah

According to The Telegraph , Arsenal striker Nketiah has emerged as a real possibility late in the window.

The 22-year-old striker is out of contract with the Gunners this summer and is refusing to sign a new deal.

Crystal Palace are keen on the youngster and had another bid rejected by Arsenal on Saturday, according to Sky Sports , but Newcastle have the funds to make it happen.

Ousmane Dembele

Dembele’s situation has varied massively throughout January. Having looked poised to agree a new contract with Barcelona, he now looks set to move.

Marca say that Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle are considering the French winger.

The 24-year-old’s wage demands could still prove a stumbling block to any Premier League transfer.

Hugo Ekitike

Reims striker Ekitike is another name on Nickson’s list of targets and the French club have confirmed that Newcastle offered £29m earlier in the window

That isn’t far off what Reims want, with club president Jean-Pierre Caillot stating recently: "We want €30m fixed plus €10m in reasonable bonuses." That works out at around £33m in total, meaning Newcastle could improve their bid to land the 19-year-old striker.

Mitchel Bakker

Bayer Leverkusen defender Mitchel Bakker is another name which has been continually linked with Newcastle.

The Magpies have Paul Dummett, Jamal Lewis and Javier Manquillo to play left-back but reportedly want an upgrade.

Newcastle came close to agreeing a fee in the region of £16m for the Dutchman earlier this month and reports in Germany say they could revisit their interest.

Rogerio

Sassuolo defender Rogerio is another name which The Athletic believes Newcastle could sign in the next few days.

The 24-year-old has been with Sassuolo since 2017 and is under contract until June 2024.

He would command around £40,000 per week in wages.
