A Newcastle city centre bar has been named the best in the north for its unique cocktails.
The Alchemist, which is based in Eldon Square shopping centre, has been awarded Cocktail Bar of the Year at The North England Prestige Awards.
The venue has been open in the city since 2017 and in that time has built up a reputation for its "theatrical" cocktails that see mixologists create smoking and colour-changing drinks, as well as those that are served up in test tubes or syringes.

And now the efforts of staff at the chain's Newcastle branch have been recognised with an award. Judges visited the bar to sample the drinks before rating them on quality, innovation, value, and consistency in performance.
Peter Davis, general manager of The Alchemist was delighted with the honour. He said: “We are so proud to have won this incredible award, the team and I couldn’t be happier to have been recognised for all our hard work over the last year.
"I’d like to say a special thank you to the whole team and all those that support us, including our brilliant customers who love theatre-served cocktails, and we promise to continue to bedazzle, bewitch and set the scene in everything we do.”
