Newcastle City Council to provide families with further support during February half term

Newcastle City Council has announced it will provide families with ongoing support during the February half term. The types of support include fun activities for children and the option of a healthy meal, part of the council's efforts amid the cost of living crisis.

17,000 children in the city will have vouchers distributed to them during the half term through the Household Support Fund, and they will massively benefit from this provision of a free, healthy meal which they may not otherwise get.

Furthermore, children who are eligible for free school meals can visit a Winter Wellbeing Hub. These are council funded venues across the community where children can get a nutritious meal, whilst also taking part in exciting activities at the same time.

This increased support is an example of the council's commitment to the Evry plan, which sees over 20 organisations join forces to support young people and their futures through an ambitious city-wide collective mission.

Evry recognises the challenges facing children, young people and families following the Covid pandemic and as a result of the current cost-of-living crisis.

Part of this plan was to launch a free travel scheme for young people with care related experience. The plan is to build on this by offering employment and work placement opportunities.

Further parts of this plan include supporting charities in the community through a £500,00 fund, free breakfast clubs for children between 4 and 10, and investment in vibrant community spaces.

Councillor Sylvia Copley, Cabinet Member for a Growing City at Newcastle City Council has given her thoughts on why is is so important to support families through this cost of living crisis.

"Families are really feeling the pinch right now and supporting them through the cost of living crisis is a top priority for us. This additional provision during February half term is vital to ensure children continue to enjoy engaging activities as well as a meal during the school holidays.

"We are committed to supporting our children and young people to have the best possible start in life and put them on a path towards a positive future."
