Newcastle Christmas Lights switch-on 2022, time and date, special guest and where it's happening

The Christmas season will kick off in Newcastle with the annual Christmas lights switch-on.

Crowds are expected to gather in the city centre for the event, which takes place four days before the city's Christmas Market opens. They will be welcome to assemble in the pedestrianised street.

The lights will remain illuminated throughout the Christmas season. This year's festive plans in Newcastle also include an extended outdoor market, events inside the indoor Grainger Market and a laser show by the Quayside.

Newcastle City Council has confirmed plans for the big switch-on as the festive season approaches.

When are Newcastle's Christmas Lights being switched on in 2022?

The Christmas Lights in Newcastle City Centre will be illuminated from Tuesday November 15 2022.

Who is switching on Newcastle's Christmas Lights?

Tilly Lockey, from Consett, will be special guest at the Christmas Lights switch-on in Newcastle (BBC)

Metro Radio DJs Steve and Karen will host the ceremony turn on Newcastle's Christmas Lights, and will be joined by special guest Tilly Lockey, a 17-year-old singer from Consett. Tilly won CBBC talent competition 'Got What It Takes' in 2021 and is a presenter for SKY TV’s kids news programme FYI: For Your Info.

Tilly will provide entertainment. She, The Lord Mayor of Newcastle Karen Robinson, Steve and Karen will be joined by guests from Frozen, panto stars and - of course - Father Christmas.

What time will Newcastle's Christmas Lights be turned on?

The switch-on event begins at 6pm on Tuesday November 15, Newcastle City Council confirmed.

Coun Lesley Storey, Cabinet Member for a Vibrant City said: “The lights switch on is the best place to be to start the Christmas countdown in Newcastle, and I am so pleased everyone will get the chance to enjoy this, especially as times are hard for many.

“We want to light up our city and provide some much-needed Christmas cheer, and what better way to do this than at this fantastic, free event.”

Karen Oxley, Metro Radio Breakfast Show presenter added: “The Newcastle Christmas lights switch on is without doubt one of the highlights of the year for me and Steve. It always marks the start of the festive season for us and with the huge crowd that always turns out, we just love having the opportunity to host it.

“We’ve got another great stage show lined up with panto stars, Santa, Disney princesses and loads more. It really is a great family night out so make sure you come along and join the fun.”

Where in Newcastle will the Christmas Lights switch-on take place?

The stage will be in place near Greys Monument, on Grey Street in a pedestrianised area where it is safe for crowds to gather. Blackett Street will remain open to traffic.

Spectators are strongly advised to arrive by public transport instead of driving, where possible.
