Eddie Howe admits he did his best to stay calm when Bruno Guimaraes' 95th minute winner flew into the corner of the Gallowgate net against Leicester City.
The stoppage-time goal sparked crazy scenes in the Toon dugout as the Brazilian's strike sealed a 2-1 win over the Foxes that all but assures Newcastle of their Premier League status for next season. The crucial victory put a 12-point gap between themselves and Burnley who stay third bottom.
Despite Howe's calm persona he and assistant Jason Tindall enjoyed the moment with Newcastle closing in on mathematical safety with six games to go.
Howe said: "I'm not a massive celebrator. I feel it inside, trust me. Everything's kept in there because that's just my personality, I can't let it spill out.
"It probably is, but I don't think it was wild by any means. It's still very contained considering the importance of the goal and the timing of it. "But in my own way, that was quite extravagant."
Newcastle's preparations for the home encounter with Crystal Palace are now under way. But Howe knows that the late goal won't do anybody any harm from a Newcastle point of view.
He said: "We don't score that many late goals that decide games. It was a brilliant, brilliant feeling for Bruno and for everyone connected with Newcastle.
"In terms of being safe, we've got work to do, we've got points to get. You never know what can happen in football, it's such an unpredictable sport, but we're certainly in a much healthier position now."
