Newcastle and Liverpool coaches charged by the FA after touchline row as allegations revealed

Newcastle United head of performance Dan Hodges has been charged by the FA following a touchline row at Anfield last week.

Fabio Carvalho's winning goal in the 98th minute ended up triggering some ugly scenes on the touchline - long after the five minutes of stoppage time had been played. Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg was filmed darting down the touchline; the cameras captured objects being thrown in the direction of the Reds' bench; and both Newcastle defender Fabian Schar and first-team coach Simon Weatherstone had to be restrained.

Eddie Howe insisted he had 'no issue with my bench protecting themselves as part of the game' days after his side's 2-1 defeat, but the FA reviewed the incident. Hodges and Achterberg have now been charged with breaching FA Rule E3, which states that a participant should 'not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour'.

An FA statement read: "Coaches from Liverpool FC and Newcastle United FC have been charged with breaching FA Rule E3 during their Premier League fixture on Sunday [sic] 31 August 2022.

"It is alleged that the behaviour of John Achterberg and Daniel Hodges in the 98th minute of that game was improper, and that the Liverpool coach also used abusive and/or insulting gestures.

"John Achterberg and Daniel Hodges both have until Thursday 8 September 2022 to provide their respective responses."
