Newcastle Airport travellers escape the worst Christmas parking fee hikes

Jetaway Geordies hoping for some festive sun might get a surprise when they come to book their parking - but the price rise for parking during Christmas week is nothing compared to other airports in the UK.

Newcastle Airport is increasing its fees slightly for families heading off for Christmas, with the cost of staying in the airport 's most popular short-stay car park from December 23-30 at £78.99 compared to £74.99 from January 13-20 - a difference of £4. And holidaymakers using Tees Valley Airport will pay exactly the same for both dates - just £40.

But a survey by Your Parking Space found that travellers heading further afield to start their holiday might be in for a nasty shock when they pay to park - with Heathrow Airport flying high on the list of shame at £156.30 to stay in its long stay parking serving terminals 2 and 3 during Christmas week compared to £104 after - a massive £52 more.

Luton, Bristol, Gatwick, Manchester, Stanstead and Leeds Bradford were all guilty of hiking their prices for Christmas holidays, with Manchester charging £30 more to park in its mid stay car park during Christmas week (£92.99) than in January (£62.99).

Luton charged £102.99 for Christmas week in car park 2 compared to £62.99 for a week in January, an increase of £40, and Leeds Bradford increased its fees by £8 for its mid stay 2 parking, from £72 in January to £80 December 23-30..

As well as Tees Valley, quieter airports such as London City, Cardiff, Bournemouth and Southampton kept their prices the same regardless of when you travel.

A spokesperson for Newcastle Airport said: “Airport parking prices do vary depending on demand throughout the year, but this is reflective of booking numbers, not in relation to public holidays. This pricing strategy allows the airport to manage parking flow and to ensure that all parking customers receive a positive experience. Customers can visit our website for the most up to date prices.”

Speaking on the price hikes, Harrison Woods, CEO at Your Parking Space said: “Anyone travelling over the Christmas season will be stunned by some of these sky-high increases in car parking fees - where some airports are increasing costs to cash in on the busy winter travel period. If you are travelling over Christmas, head to Your Parking Space website to find off-site convenient and affordable parking for your journey.”

Prices quoted were correct on December 2, 2022.
