Newark, Newark: Release date for new TV sitcom starring Beverley Callard and Mathew Horne

A new sitcom filmed in Newark will hit TV screens in March.

Newark, Newark stars Beverley Callard, who played Liz McDonald in Coronation Street, and Burton Joyce-born Mathew Horne.

The comedy follows pugnacious chip shop manager and exhausted matriarch, Maxine, played by Morgana Robinson, as she tries to ride out her divorce and find someone who lights her fire.

However, it's easier said than done with her big-mouthed, soft-bellied, son, Leslie (Jai Hollis), dramatically coming out as gay to the surprise of no one and her dullard ex-husband, Terry (Horne), trying ever more desperately to win her back.

The sitcom, described as a gritty working-class comedy, has been commissioned by UKTV channel Gold.

Newark, Newark was written by Nathan Foad and is loosely based on his childhood and adolescence in the market town, where his mother ran a chip shop.

Mr Foad previously told Nottinghamshire Live: "Making Newark, Newark is my wildest dream come true.

"If I could go back in time and tell my teenage self anything, I'd look him straight in his chubby little face and I'd say 'growing up different in this town might not be easy, but one day they're gonna let you make a TV show about it. Also, learn to breathe through your nose'."
