New zero-waste and eco-friendly store opens in Long Eaton

A brand new zero-waste store has opened its doors in Long Eaton. The shop, Ora Designs, is located on Derby Road in the former Davies Fruit and Veg store.

The store opened on December 2. It sells eco-friendly, zero-waste, sustainable-living homeware items.

Owner Hannah Barnes handmakes the items at her workshop in Trent Lock. She first started in lockdown and selling items online to now opening the shop.

“We opened last Friday and it’s been really well-received so far,” the 36-year-old said. “There’s not a lot of shops like this around here. All of the items are made out of discarded recycled materials, all our packaging is recycled. We don't use single-use plastic.

“We’ve got a pet range, with dog supplies. Also a garden range, to house bugs and bees, anything to help them pollinate.

“And a bathroom range, with bamboo products and eco-friendly face cloths. Stationary, desk tidy and pen pots."

Apart from the glass items in the store, it’s all made by the former maths teacher. Hannah added: “The rest is basically home-made. It’s handmade by me in my workshop in Trent Lock. As like most people, it started in lockdown. I’ve always made stuff since I was younger with my grandad who was an engineer.

“In lockdown it was mainly friends and family, and selling online. Early this summer I went on Etsy.

“I think everyone is quite aware that the pollution in the sea is mounting up and the landfill is overflowing. Collectively seven billion people in the world can play a small part. The point really is to make a small change to make a big difference.”

The store is open from Wednesday to Saturday between 11am and 7pm, and on Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
