New York state government agencies are now required to conduct reviews and publish reports detailing the use of artificial intelligence software, as per a new law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. The bill, signed by the Democratic governor, mandates state agencies to assess any software utilizing algorithms, computational models, or AI techniques. These reviews must be submitted to the governor, top legislative leaders, and posted online.
The law also prohibits the use of AI in specific scenarios, such as making automated decisions on unemployment benefits or child care assistance without consistent human monitoring. Furthermore, the legislation safeguards state workers from having their hours or job duties restricted due to AI implementation.
State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, a Democrat who sponsored the bill, emphasized the significance of this law in establishing boundaries for the use of emerging technology within state government. The move aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the deployment of AI software across various state agencies.
