New York Mets right-hander Kodai Senga is currently facing some arm fatigue issues following a recent side session during spring training. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed that Senga is under evaluation by the team's medical staff to determine the extent of his condition. It is yet to be decided whether an MRI scan will be required for the Japanese pitcher.
Mendoza addressed the situation with reporters in Port St. Lucie, Florida, expressing the need for further assessment due to the late development. Senga had been on the mound the previous day, but subsequently reported experiencing overall arm fatigue.
The Mets had high hopes for Senga to play a pivotal role in their starting rotation, especially after his impressive rookie season. In addition to Senga, the team made significant offseason acquisitions, including right-hander Luis Severino and left-hander Sean Manaea, as well as acquiring right-hander Adrian Houser in a trade with Milwaukee in December.
The 31-year-old Senga signed a lucrative $75 million, five-year contract with New York in December 2022, following his stellar performance last season where he posted a 12-7 record with a 2.98 ERA in 29 starts.
After a disappointing fourth-place finish in the NL East with a 75-87 record in 2023, the Mets are aiming for a strong comeback. David Stearns assumed the role of president of baseball operations in September, with Mendoza joining as manager in November.
