New York Mets Honor Slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller

Candlelight vigil for late NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, in Massapequa

The New York Mets paid tribute to slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller with a moment of silence before their home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field in Queens. Both teams lined up along the baselines as a tribute to Diller was displayed on the Jumbotron. The New York City Police Department expressed gratitude to the Mets for honoring Officer Diller and his family during the Opening Day ceremony.

Officer Diller was tragically shot during a traffic stop in Queens by a man with a history of prior arrests. The suspect, Guy Rivera, allegedly shot Diller in the stomach as he attempted to get Rivera to exit the vehicle. Rivera then opened fire on Diller and his partner, resulting in the officer's untimely death.

Another individual in the vehicle at the time of the incident, Lindy Jones, faced charges including criminal possession of a weapon and defacing a weapon. The Mets' tribute coincided with funeral services for Officer Diller in Long Island, where he was remembered as a dedicated officer and a loving husband and father.

Former President Donald Trump attended the wake for Officer Diller, while New York Governor Kathy Hochul made a brief appearance at the services. Officer Diller, who had served three years with the NYPD, will be laid to rest in Massapequa on Saturday.
