New York Jets coach Robert Saleh's three-word message for Zach Wilson before NFL return

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson was brought back in from the cold to start against the Detroit Lions, having been benched for bad form earlier in the season, and head coach Robert Selah had some words of wisdom for him.

Wilson had a poor start to the season for the Jets, and is believed to have lost the support of his team-mates after refusing to take the blame after a dire performance cost his side against the New England Patriots.

Backup quarterback Mike White suffered mixed fortunes when he was brought in, securing a win over the Chicago Bears but flattering to deceive against the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions, before suffering an injury against the Lions forcing him out of Sunday's game.

Ahead of his return to the starting spot, Wilson apparently spoke with Saleh at practice. The head coach opened up on what he told the young quarterback, instructing him to "just be you."

Saleh said: "Zach had a good week of practice. His mechanics are much better, but I do expect a few things to crop up today. I told him don’t overthink it, just go out and play. Just. Be. You.”

Speaking about returning to the team, Wilson seemed jovial about his chances and joked things couldn't go much worse than they already had this season.

He said: "The worst has already happened for me, personally, right? I'm just going to go out there and have fun."

"I definitely believe in myself. Of course, I have all the confidence in the world -- I think that's how it should be -- but you have to be able to prove that."

Saleh was adamant that despite benching Wilson and moving him out of the pecking order completely, it was always his plan to bring the former first-round draft pick back into the starting spot at some point.
