Two New York City police officers have been shot with one killed and another in a life threatening condition in hospital after going to a domestic violence report in Harlem.
Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell told a news conference: "Tonight, a 22 year-old son, husband, officer and friend was killed because he did what we asked him to do."
He has been named as Jason Rivera who had only been doing the job since 2020.
The injured policeman is aged 27 and joined the force in 2018. He is undergoing surgery.
“It’s bad,” a New York Post police source said of the injured officer’s condition.
The suspect, who police identified as LaShawn McNeil, 47, was shot by a third officer and is in a critical condition, reported the New York Times.
NYPD tweeted: "Tonight, we mourn the loss of a hero officer — a son, husband, and friend.
"Only 22 years old, Police Officer Jason Rivera was murdered in the line of duty. We vow to #NeverForget Jason as his fellow Finest vow to honor his tremendous legacy of service & the ultimate sacrifice."
The incident occurred after police went to a domestic call around 6pm local time at West 135th Street on Friday.
"It is our city against the killers!" Mayor Eric Adams said.
"This was just not an attack on three brave officers. This was an attack on the city of New York."
Police were responding to a report of domestic violence involving a mother and son, said police.
The cops spoke to the mum in a front room but when they went into another room they are believed to have been fired at.
“He suddenly, without warning, opened fire on them,” reportedly said NYPD Commissioner Sewell.
A total of four New York City police officers have been shot this week.
One officer was shot in the leg on Tuesday as he scuffled with an armed teenager.
Another officer was also shot in the leg on Thursday after a man fired through the door of a home that was being searched for drugs. Neither officer was killed in those shootings.
The violence is an early challenge for Adams, a retired police officer who took over as mayor on January 1.
Adams was elected after putting public safety at the centre of his campaign but New York has seen a spike in violent crimes during the pandemic.
