Previously, a thunderstorm warning has been in place for much of England and Wales between midday and midnight on Sunday, but now the North East and Scotland have been included in further heavy rain warnings stretching over the next 24 hours. At this stage, the Met Office forecast is for rain to hit the North East by 6pm and to become heavier throughout the evening and night.
The latest warning reads: "Heavy rain moving northwards on Sunday evening may bring some disruption. Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
"Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services. There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
"There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded road. There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses."
A further warning is now in place for Monday. Therefore weather warnings are now in place in the North East until midday on Monday.
