New Year's Eve concert in Dublin scrapped in favour of 'family friendly' event

The New Year's Eve concert in Dublin city centre has been scrapped in favour of a more "family friendly" event.

This year's festivities are set to take place along the River Liffey, at North Wall Quay, Sir John Rogerson Quay and in the city centre on December 31. And organisers of Dublin New Year's festival are planning a change to the celebrations after last year’s concert had to be cancelled due to a spike in Covid-19 cases.

Last year the planned New Year celebrations included a headline concert by Picture This, afternoon shows at Dublin Castle and a street party near St Stephen's Green.. But to ring in 2023, a family-friendly New Year’s Eve Matinée is planned with an earlier countdown at North Wall Quay from 4pm.

This year’s festival will include music, food, and bars along the quays with a focus on the countdown and fireworks display along the River Liffey. There will also be family entertainers and street performers, according to the application for the outdoor licence.

The 30-minute performance will start at 6.30pm building to the earlier countdown celebrations at 7pm.

Dublin City Council’s planning office licence application reads: “The New Year’s Festival will take place on December 31, 2022. The format of the event has changed slightly in comparison to previous years with no concert taking place but the main focus now being on the Midnight Moment and the fireworks display on the river to ring in the new year.

“There will be a festival set up along both North and South Quays with numerous hubs of live music, food units and bars.” Meanwhile, the annual fireworks display is set to go ahead and the site will be open from 4pm to members of the public.

The New Year’s Eve Festival along the North Wall Quay and Sir John Rogerson Quay is scheduled to run from 8pm to 40 minutes after midnight, with the fireworks display on pontoons in the Liffey from Samuel Beckett Bridge to Tom Clarke Bridge. There will be space for 24,000 people, although but tickets will be needed to attend.
