New Year's Eve 2020: Samoa and Tonga are first countries in the world to welcome in 2021

The Pacific Islands of Samoa, Tonga and Christmas Island/Kiribati have been the first countries in the world to welcome in 2021.

A firework display took place in Samoa's capital, Apia, as the country entered the New Year.

The Government shared a live video of the fireworks which also shows houses decorated for the festive period.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi wished its citizens well in a message of hope for 2021.

January 1 on the islands began at 10am GMT on December 31.

And despite being only a one hour flight away from Samoa, the island of American Samoa is 25 hours behind and will be one of the last places to enter the New Year.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, people have been warned to scale down celebrations for the New Year in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.

In the UK, where nearly eight in ten people are under stay-at-home orders from today, the Government has urged everyone to avoid meeting people from different households.

While countries across the world are planning quieter celebrations this year, there are some jubilant scenes already ahead of New Year festivities.

In New York, the traditional Time Square NYE ball drop will be live-streamed.

The virtual celebrations start at 6pm UK time and will include hourly countdowns as well as live performances from Pitbull, Anitta, Jennifer Lopez and Cyndi Lauper, Jimmie Allen.
