New workshop unveiled as engineering firm taken on by client embraces new era

A £500,000 investment has been unveiled by Collingwood Engineering as the Barton-based business tools up for a new era.

Purpose-built workshop and offices have been complemented with a fleet of new machines, five years on from owner Jason Dear taking on the family entity.

The Trainload managing director was a long-standing client, but saw an opportunity to fine-tune a business and build on strong foundations, reputation and service.

He brought his 25 years of engineering experience to a business formed in the Seventies, taking it from Dam Road to a new location in the town.

“When I took over Collingwood Engineering, the company had two employees,” he recalled. “Over the past four years, we’ve grown our team to nine members of staff and created invaluable apprenticeships.

“The investment into new machinery and bespoke facilities has allowed Collingwood Engineering to improve its service offering to clients, including planned and unplanned maintenance cover with a focus on a quick turnaround.

“We specialise in precision machining including turning, drilling, welding, boring, slotting, milling, fabrication and screw cutting in manufacturing, food, water, petrochemical, steel, marine, rail, and agricultural sectors for a wide variety of local, national, and international clients,” Mr Dear said. “Our team of highly skilled engineers have a wealth of expertise in precision machining, working with a wide variety of materials ranging from plastics to stainless steel and more specialised materials.”

New machines include lathes, millers, a vertical borer, slotter, MIG and TIG welders, a five-tonne overhead crane and forklift. It has enhanced capacity and capability.

The sizeable plot of land on Humber Road Industrial Estate was purchased from North Lincolnshire Council, and Mr Dear said it presents significant potential for further expansion.

“Further investment is planned in the coming years on both machinery and team members, which would include new CNC machines and a further intake of qualified workshop machinists and apprentices to support our growth and to support local industry and fuel the Humber economy,” he said.

“For many years, we have offered urgent breakdown works and this has now been expanded to ensure that urgent works are our priority, to ensure a fast response enabling clients to be back in operation as quickly as possible, minimising downtime.

“As well as unplanned maintenance, we also work with companies on planned maintenance, which includes supporting many local contracting companies with their onsite works.

“We’re dedicated to being a first-rate engineering specialist that applies exceptional levels of skill, expertise, and industry knowledge to every project.”

During the expansion, the business has also achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification, providing full traceability from order to delivery.

It has also added a new fleet of vehicles to offer a collection and delivery service across both banks of the Humber, as well as a work management system to improve planning and efficiency.

Mr Dear added: “The improvements implemented have increased the company turnover five-fold in the last four years, and further growth is predicted in 2022 and beyond.

“We continue to strive to improve on our service offering to clients, continue to invest in training for our team, and expand our capabilities while remaining an SME.

“We are pleased to be able to support companies ranging from SME to PLC and welcome all enquiries.”
