New work to take place at Dumfries town centre derelict building

A new phase of works is to take place at a derelict building in English Street, Dumfries.

The former Treasure Cave unit had extensive demolition work carried out last year and the street was closed to traffic for weeks during the operation.

Now the council has established a partial road closure in English Street to examine the area along with engineers and Westlakes Demolition experts.

Slates and rubble began falling onto the street last year, sparking safety fears.

The area was cordoned off while a large part of the building was demolished and removed.

Callum McKay, owner of electrical store T N McKay, told of his frustration at more disruption in the street.

He said: “An internal floor was left in the Treasure Cave building to ensure its structural integrity.

“But it has begun to fall down and now the council are having a look at it and Westlakes Demolition have been back as well. Barriers have gone up again and they are right outside my front door.”

Westlakes plan to start removing internal floors and, possibility, the face of the building next week.
