A busy junction serving the M8 in Glasgow will be shut for five months to carry out essential repair work.
The on slip for the motorway at St Georges Road at Charing Cross will be closed from July 8.
The work will see waterproofing works for the M8 underpass carried out and also an upgraded road layout on the street above.
The council said the work is needed to “extend the life and operation of the M8 Charing Cross underpass and safeguard its further operation for many years to come”.
On the road above linking Woodlands Road and St Georges Road to Sauchiehall Street there will be work “upgrading the traffic signals and installing new and improved facilitates for both walking and cycling”.
The job is due to start on July 8 and continue until December 2, weather permitting.
The closures will be the M8 Junction 18 eastbound on-slip road, the southbound lane of St George’s Road at its junction with Woodlands Road and the M8 and also the horseshoe turn within the Charing Cross junction that allows drivers to travel from the M8 westbound off-slip road to Woodlands Road.
The M8 itself is not scheduled to close during these works. Anyone wishing to reach Woodlands Road and the northbound lane of St George’s Road from the westbound M8 off-slip road at Junction 18 can use a diversion along Bath Street and North Street.
The council said diversions and traffic management will be in place but it is anticipated there will be delays to traffic in this area over the course of this work.
A diversion route will also be implemented for walking, wheeling and cycling.
A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: “We have been working closely with colleagues in Transport Scotland, their maintenance contractor Amey and Sustrans on this project.
“These are essential works will make a long-term improvement to the Charing Cross underpass and also create a better connection to the city centre for all modes of transport.
“There will be delays during the works and we are sorry for any inconvenience this will cause.
“By working jointly with Transport Scotland and Amey on the sequence of these works, we aim to limit the overall disruption experienced by those who use this junction.
“Diversions will be in place but it will be important to plan ahead to help manage the expected impact on journey times.”
The work involves excavating the road surface above the underpass to expose the structure and replace the waterproofing, which will be undertaken by Amey Highways.
After this work is completed the council will reinstate the surface while creating an upgraded experience for all users.
This will include the installation of upgraded footways, segregated cycle facilitates and new traffic signals.
