New tourism guru is appointed to help drive visitor numbers to Ayrshire

A new tourism guru has been appointed for Ayrshire.

VisitScotland has appointed Lynsey Eckford as their new Regional Director covering the Ayrshire and Arran region.

Ms Eckford will now work with stakeholders and partners to find ways to support the growth of the visitor economy.

And the new regional director said she is keen to engage with the communities throughout the region.

She said: “The last few years have been transformative for everyone. And as I start in this new role with VisitScotland, I am excited to work with and support the community and tourism industry in Ayrshire and Arran as we move forward towards recovery.”

Ms Eckford began her career in tourism and hospitality nearly 20 years ago, starting off with hotel work, before joining VisitScotland’s Quality Assurance team, which allowed her to visit, connect and learn from a diverse range of businesses.

She also served as an Industry Relationship Manager for Glasgow.

She said: “I take up the position at an important time for the tourism industry in the region and will help deliver the newly developed Ayrshire & Our Islands Visitor Economy Strategy.

“The tourism blueprint brings together The National Tourism Organisation with Ayrshire & Arran Destination Alliance, East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire Councils and Scottish Enterprise.

“The strategy will help to deliver economic recovery following the pandemic but with an emphasis on the natural environment, to benefit visitors’ well-being and aid social regeneration.

“With the return of travel, there is a serious focus on how the tourism industry can thrive responsibly and sustainably now and in the future.

“VisitScotland, is working with several partners to promote responsible tourism, while encouraging and supporting its development within the industry, communities, destinations, visitors and strategic partners own campaigns educating visitors on how to help alleviate pressure points, enjoy our countryside and towns responsibly and keep the area unspoiled.

“It is worth remembering that many come to Ayrshire and Arran to enjoy the attractions, history and nature so the more that we can do to encourage them to visit responsibly, the better the experience for everyone.”

She added: “I’m passionate about responsible tourism, especially how it can be used to protect this area’s scenery and landmarks for future generations while boosting the local economy.

“I am looking forward to working with stakeholders to facilitate community led tourism as we continue to help visitors make responsible choices whilst here."
