J’Neil Bennett has become the first player to score a competitive goal at Tottenham’s new stadium after opening the scoring in their U18s meeting with Southampton.
Bennett followed in the footsteps of Tom Pratt, the first Tottenham player to score at the old White Hart Lane against Notts County in 1899, with a wonderful strike.
Moments after captain Armando Shashoua headed over the Southampton crossbar, Spurs were on the front foot again and, after Oliver Skipp fed Bennett, the 17-year-old cut inside Southampton’s Kayne Ramsay on the edge of the area before curling his effort past Jack Bycroft and into the bottom corner.
The U18s Premier League meeting was rescheduled to enable a first test event as Spurs look to secure a safety certificate from the local council in order to officially open the stadium against Crystal Palace on April 3.
30,000 fans made their way back to Tottenham after nearly two seasons at Wembley Stadium to take a look around their new home and catch a glimpse of the stars of the future.
The second test event, which will require an increased capacity of at least 45,000, takes place on March 30 when a Spurs Legends side face their Inter Milan counterparts.
