Tesla launched the new Model Y in the U.S. and Europe late Thursday, after unveiling the refreshed crossover in China earlier this month. Tesla stock edged lower Friday.
In the U.S. and Europe, Tesla will start with a limited-edition Model Y Launch Series. It will carry a premium for early buyers. That's similar to the Cybertruck Foundation Series, with cost an extra $20,000, though that included Full Self-Driving.
The higher price also may reflected limited production of the new Model Y to start. Tesla will continue to sell the old Model Y for the time being.
In the U.S. the Model Y Launch series will cost $59,990, with the $8,000 FSD included. The Model Y Launch is a Long Range All-Wheel Drive. The current Model Y LR AWD goes for $47,990. Even accounting for the $8,000 FSD, the new Model Y is $4,000 more than its current version.
Further, Tesla is promoting "reduced pricing" for its existing Model Y inventory, with discounts topping $4,000 in some instances.
The "Juniper" Model Y has a clearly different front and back, as opposed to the minor exterior changes to the updated Model S, X and 3. The updated crossover EV will have a range of 320 miles, taking 4.1 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour.
Tesla Model Y deliveries will begin in March in China, the U.S. and Europe. The near-simultaneous rollout is a change from the Model 3 refresh.
The Tesla Shanghai plant made the new Model 3 first, with deliveries starting in China and soon Europe in late 2023. In the U.S., a slow production ramp at the Fremont plant began in early 2024.
A successful Model Y refresh is critical to Tesla's business. The current crossover accounts for the vast majority of Tesla's EV sales and is the world's best-selling vehicle of any kind.
