New South of Midnight trailer shows combat and confirms a release window

A South of Midnight screenshot.

South of Midnight is easily one of the most unique looking games to be shown so far in this year's Xbox Games Showcase. The latest trailer for the Compulsion Games developed action-adventure title gave us our first good look at the combat mechanics in action and finally confirmed an official release window.

With an incredible art-direction that seems to evoke elements of stop-motion video, we're very interested to dive into everything that South of Midnight has to offer. The trailer showed off some traversal mechanics, with the protagonist Hazel making use of a magical glider to fly around the world and a grappling hook to reach high places.

We also saw Hazel fighting a large creature with a range of melee attacks and dodging heavy incoming blows. The trailer confirmed that the game is set to launch in 2025 and will be available on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. It will be part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, allowing subscribers to play at no additional cost.

The game's Steam store page is currently live and states that "as Hazel, you will explore the mythos and encounter creatures of Southern folklore in a macabre and fantastical world." It also gives us some insight into the game's story, which will see Hazel's hometown wrecked by an unspecific disaster.

This will prompt here to become "a Weaver: a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits." With these powers, she "will confront and subdue dangerous creatures, untangle the webs of her own family's shared past and -if she's lucky - find her way to a place that feels like home."
