New South Bristol recycling centre opening date finally announced

The opening date for Bristol’s third recycling centre has finally been announced - as June 21. The centre, on Hartcliffe Way in Bedminster, was supposed to open last year, and then in ‘early 2022’, but will open on the summer solstice with a fanfare involving the Mayor of Bristol.

The centre is the first of its kind in South Bristol, and will seek to ease the burden on the existing centres in Avonmouth and St Philips. The centre will be one of the largest household reuse and recycling centres in the region, and will include a second Bristol Waste Reuse Shop and workshop, which will sell and repair good quality ‘pre-loved items’ that might otherwise have gone to waste.

Work on the centre has been continuing for more than a year now, but news of an opening date at last, has been welcomed by Cllr Kye Dudd, the cabinet member responsible for waste. “With the opening of a brand-new household Recycling Centre on Hartcliffe Way, we are making recycling easier and more accessible for people in South Bristol,” he said.

“This is going to make a huge contribution to changing people’s attitude to waste and recycling in the area. I’m especially happy to be taking steps to tackling climate issues, whilst directly benefiting residents and also the local economy,” he added.

The new site will be open seven days a week from 8am to 6.45pm in the summer hours. Bristol Waste recently changed the system of getting access to the two existing recycling centres - from an alternate vehicle number plate system to one which requires people to book a timed slot in advance.

The online booking system to visit the new South Bristol recycling centre opens on Tuesday, June 7 - a fortnight ahead of the first day.
