Met Office issues new ice warnings for London and the East as UK set for more Arctic weather

Weather forecasters have issued further alerts ahead of more icy weather this weekend.

The Met Office has put out more weather warnings for London, the South East, East Midlands and East of England.

The overnight alerts, for icy weather only, take effect from 7pm this evening (Friday) and through the night, ending tomorrow morning.

It comes as forecasters warn of particularly chilly temperatures tonight amidst widespread snowfall across parts of the UK.

Andrew Page-Dove, of National Highways, said weather conditions will deteriorate this evening.

"We've got some very cold weather overnight," he said.

"We've got the risk of potentially freezing rain and then more snow tomorrow.

"So the conditions are actually going to get worse rather than better."

The snowfall resulted into major chaos on the M62 near Manchester on Friday morning, after vehicles came to a standstill as motorists wrestled with the adverse road conditions.

"But we will be continuously out there treating the roads and our intention is to keep the M62 open.

"We have well-rehearsed plans which we execute every time we have these types of events.

"It is purely the combination of volume of traffic and (drivers) maybe not being as well prepared for the conditions."

Parts of the UK have been buried under up to eight inches of snow today (Friday) (PA)

Scotland, northern England, Northern Ireland and parts of Wales have been covered in snow which has resulted in chaos on the roads and travel disruption.

Tonight's new warnings cover parts of London, Kent, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and the whole of East Anglia.

Forecasters have warned of potentially hazardous travel conditions on untreated surfaces and the possibility of injuries on the ice.

Warnings for snow are set to continue for parts of the UK throughout the weekend meanwhile.

Yellow alerts are in place for snow and ice in Scotland, as well as for ice in Yorkshire and the North East, North West, North Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Met Office said: "Further snowfall has the potential to cause disruption Saturday evening into Sunday.

It added there was the possibility for travel disruption with the weather leaving some vehicles stranded, unpassable pathways and pavements and a potential for injuries on slippery surfaces.

"There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected," the Met Office added.
