Construction will start this week on the new Gillieston Heights skate park and play space next to Roy Jordan Oval, Maitland City Council says.
The $927,000 project will include a skating flow bowl with a keyhole transition, waterfall to a deep bowl, transition extensions and a mogul.
Funded by council and the NSW government's Places to Play program, work is expected to be completed in December.
Maitland City Council said the community were given a choice of two design options earlier this year, with 90 per cent of voters supporting the selected flow bowl style.
"It will cater to everyone from beginners to more advanced levels and it's located right next to the sport facility and play space, which means residents will have great recreation opportunities right at their doorstep," Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said.
He said the skate park would be a "fantastic addition to Gillieston Heights".
The existing play space will be upgraded to include nature and water elements, accessible footpaths, picnic tables, and shade structures.
NSW Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully said the state government contributed $500,000 towards the Maitland project.
"This new skate park and upgraded play space at Roy Jordan Oval will greatly benefit the local community and provide a meeting place for people of all ages," Mr Scully said.
