New signs put town on the map

Members of Bathgate Community Council have been continuing in their efforts to put the town on the map and champion its many achievements.

People living or working in Bathgate will have noticed a few new features over the last few weeks.

A range of initiatives undertaken by the town’s community council has see the area around The Steelyard revamped, to improve visitor experience.

A series of leaflets and booklets are also available, emphasising some of the most famous aspects of Bathgate’s history.

The changes have been made possible with funding obtained from the Scottish Government and assistance from West Lothian Council.

There are now four ‘Welcome to Bathgate’ signs which signal the community council’s commitment to stress both the age of the town - dating back at least to 1160 - as well as the important part it has played in Scottish and British history.

Community council member, David Main, explained: “This is exemplified by the slogan ‘Wee Town, BIG History” which - sadly - seems to have been all but forgotten nowadays. This subsequently saw the community council, in partnership with our colleagues from the Bennie Museum, launch several booklets/leaflets emphasising several aspects from the town’s past, the most recent being Herons and Helicopters booklet, which looked at aspects from the town’s past from a royal perspective.

“In The Steelyard, Bathgate Community Council has also had installed a map board of the town centre whose reverse features some of the highlights from Bathgate’s recent history.

“Characters such as George Harvie-Watt and Mr Peter McLagan as well as Sir James Young Simpson and Bernard Gallacher are featured - all part of the community council’s overall initiative to put Bathgate back on the map of Scotland’s story as well as attract visitors to the town.”
