A show remembering a lost Wirral theatre is coming to the borough next week.
The Argyle Theatre, which was a fixture on Birkenhead's Argyle Street for more than a century, never reopened after it was struck in the Liverpool Blitz of September 1940. The building was eventually knocked down in 1973, but was once dubbed 'The Cradle of the Stars', playing host to names such as Charlie Chaplin, George Formby and 'Soldier's Sweetheart' Gertie Gitana.
A new exhibition about the theatre launched earlier this month at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum, in Oxton. Now, Heswall Musical Society will take to the stage in 'The Argyle Remembered', to tell the story of the Argyle Theatre in song and dance.

The theatre opened in 1868 and once stood where the House of Frazer (formerly Beatties) car park is now situated. The show was researched and written by Joan Clement and is produced by Phil Lyne and Greg Williams as musical director.
The production will feature portrayals of some of the stars who once treaded the boards at the Argyle. Looking ahead to the performances, producer Phil Lyne said: "All the cast have worked hard during the last few months to put this show together.
"I'm sure you will know most of the Old Time Music Hall songs that are being performed in this show. They include 'Shine on Harvest Moon', 'You Made Me Love You' and 'Let's All Go Down The Strand', plus many more."
Performances of 'The Argyle Remembered' will be at Heswall Hall on Thursday, June 30 and Friday, July 1 at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee on July 2 at 2.30pm. Tickets are £10, with concessions priced at £8 concessions. You can book by calling 0151 648 3457.
