New sewer flood prevention facility in Lanarkshire almost complete

A major project to prevent flooding in a Lanarkshire town is almost complete.

The installation of a new storage tank and larger pipes will reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Lanark.

And the £2.5m investment is nearing its conclusion at the site of Wellgate car park, with only final remedial works yet to be carried out.

Scottish Water say the project is making good progress, and brief travel disruption in the near future will be far outweighed by the long term benefits of the water facility.

Their alliance partner amey-binnies is delivering the installation of the new storm storage tank which will reduce the risk of excess sewer flooding caused by severe weather.

The works will increase the capacity of the existing sewer running along Bernard’s Wynd in the town.

During times of heavy rainfall, excess water will spill into this new tank and be stored there before being pumped back into the sewer once water levels there are low again.

Works on the main sewer pipe installation are due to begin in Bernard’s Wynd at the end of March.

All traffic management arrangements and local diversions have been agreed in liaison with South Lanarkshire Council.

Road users and the local community are thanked for their patience.

Georgina Reid from Scottish Water told Lanarkshire Live : “Any short-term disruption will far outweigh the long-term benefits we’ll achieve here once this project has been fully completed.

“We’d once again like to thank the local community and businesses for their continued co-operation and understanding while we deliver these essential works.

"We will continue to work with you to ensure this remains the case.”
