New season for Lanarkshire fiddle club kicks off as locals enjoy host of music led by talented 14-year-old

A fantastic turnout of music lovers were on hand to show their support to a Lanarkshire fiddle club last week.

The season is now underway for Biggar Accordion and Fiddle Club who treated locals to an array of talent on Sunday evening, February 13.

The guest artiste on the night was 14-year-old Fin Hope's Scottish Dance Band from Broughton in Peeblesshire.

The youngster was making his debut as band leader and didn't have to look far for his fellow members with Tom Gold on fiddle, Adam Gibb on second box, Andrew Gibb on drums and Jim Gold on keyboard.

A spokesman from the Biggar group said: "Fin did an excellent job ably supported by the boys, who all being regulars anyway, helped out during the course of the afternoon in various roles by backing the local players."

Fin played a couple of poignant tributes to the club’s late founder, Alex MacArthur, namely Old Comrades and The Highland Wedding and his programme included a sizzling Continental polka entitled A Fond La Caisse.

The emotional nod to the group's heritage was well received by a great crowd who came along on the evening.

Fin had quite the charm with them with a hilarious introduction of his fellow bad members, before leading a rock solid set for all to enjoy.

The youngster was hailed as "a young man with a very bright future ahead of him."

Other talent on the night included Newby Park from Carlisle on accordion; Marshall Harkness; Fiona Paul, John Stuart (Ellon), Allan Smith, John Elliot, Sheena Dickson, Charlie Todd and young Emily Gold – who always steals the show.

The group's only fiddler was Shona McLeod from Strathaven, described as a fine young player, and on vocals was Shelley Gold. Keyboard players were Fiona Paul, Aileen Jamieson (Ellon) and Keith Dickson and drummers were Tom and Fin Hope, and Andrew Gibb.

Next month the club will meet on Sunday, March 13 at 2pm in the Biggar Bowling Club with a guest artiste to be announced shortly.
