Recently, a groundbreaking satellite known as the Eye in the Sky has been launched to provide crucial data on methane, a potent greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. This satellite, funded by notable figures like Jeff Bezos and other donors, is a project of the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund.

The Methane sat is equipped to orbit the Earth every 95 minutes, offering detailed insights into methane emissions associated with natural gas production. Methane, with over 80 times the heat-trapping power of carbon dioxide, poses a significant threat to the environment.

By detecting methane leaks from sources such as old equipment and flaring practices, the satellite aims to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their emissions. The Permian Basin in Texas has already been surveyed for methane leaks, revealing significant wastage of gas that could otherwise heat millions of homes annually.

Unlike other satellites that may keep their findings private, the Environmental Defense Fund plans to make their methane emission data publicly accessible on Google Earth Engine within 18 months. This move towards transparency will empower countries and companies to make informed decisions about their gas purchases, potentially leading to positive climate impacts.

The satellite's ability to provide real-time monitoring of methane emissions across oil and gas fields worldwide marks a significant advancement in understanding greenhouse gas emissions. This newfound clarity offers a unique opportunity for stakeholders to directly observe and address environmental concerns.

As methane accounts for a substantial portion of global warming, the satellite's data could play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. By shedding light on methane leaks and encouraging accountability, the Eye in the Sky represents a step towards a more sustainable future.
