New Sandymount cycleway set to get go-ahead as locals plan is shot down

The new Sandymount cycleway is set to get going in January in spite of local objections to the project.

The new route along the Strand Road will involve cutting traffic down to just one lane outbound from the city centre in parts to allow for the two-way cycle track to be installed.

The cycle lane will run from Merrion Gates to Sean Moore Rd as bollards and orcas will be installed for protection.

More permanent protective structures will be put in place if the trial is successful.

The trial period, lasting six months, will go ahead on January 15 after the National Transport Authority and Dublin City Council shot down the alternative proposal from residents of the area.

The residents idea, which would have involved eating into the footpath to create the cycleway and bikes merging with traffic at bus stops, would pose a safety risk and create traffic chaos, according to RTE.

A residents forum, to be chaired by the Lord Mayor Hazel Chu, will be established next month, with local traffic surveys and information campaigns also on the way before the trial begins.
