New rugby world rankings as Scotland stun England in Six Nations Ireland thrash Wales

England have fallen into fourth place in the latest World Rugby rankings as Eddie Jones' side feel the impact of their disappointing Six Nations defeat to Scotland in the Calcutta Cup.

This defeat means that Ireland rise above England into third, with Andy Farrell's side having convincingly beaten Wales in Dublin in the tournament's curtain raiser on Saturday afternoon.

World champions South Africa remain in top spot with New Zealand just behind them in second place with Ireland and England their closest competitors.

France, who will want to move up the rankings to prove their pedigree sit fifth in the table, closely followed by Scotland, whose win over England moves them above Australia.

Wales, after a disappointing autumn and an opening weekend defeat here, are eighth, having topped the table as recently as 2019.

Meanwhile, Italy are a disappointing 14th below the likes of Argentina, Japan, Fiji, Samoa and Georgia but will hope to move up the table this month after an impressive performance in Paris on Sunday.

Italy have been consistently cited as a reason for the Six Nations to open up to other nations like Georgia. However, Georgia will be disappointed having only managed a 25-25 draw with Portugal this weekend with the latter rising three places to 17th.
