New research reveals Scotland's most popular filming locations

NEW research has revealed the most famous filming locations in Scotland.

Casino Hawks has sourced over one million social media posts to discover the most popular filming location in the country.

Many major blockbusters have been filmed in Scotland, including recent releases The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Where is the most popular film location in Scotland?

According to the data, Glencoe is Scotland’s most popular filming location. It featured in the James Bond movie Skyfall (below), the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

It was chosen as the iconic location for Skyfall house, the main character’s childhood home.

The data revealed the location had been tagged on Instagram 569,290 times – over double that of Somerset House in London which also appeared in the franchise.

It topped the 10 most popular filming locations across the whole of the UK as well as Scotland, beating the Giant’s Causeway (Dracula Untold) in Northern Ireland and Portobello Road (Notting Hill) in London to the top spot.

Where are the other locations on the list?

The top five most popular filming locations in Scotland based on the number of hashtags on Instagram are:

Glencoe – James Bond: Skyfall – 569,280

Isle of Harris – A Space Odyssey – 111,152

Glenfinnan Viaduct - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 75,900

George Square – World War Z – 58,007

Doune Castle – Monty Python and the Holy Grail – 21,628

Where do these locations feature in each film?

The Isle of Harris, particularly Luskentyre Beach, was used to depict the alien environment of Jupiter in the movie’s final sequence.

The Hogwarts Express crosses the iconic viaduct (below) in several of the Harry Potter films and its connection to the film series continues to draw a number of visitors to the area.

George Square featured in World War Z starring Brad Pitt and has been spotted in other films including The Flash.

Doune Castle, near the village of Doune in central Scotland, featured heavily in 1975’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
