New Renault Megane gets plug-in power

AN upgraded Renault Megane is on the way and will come with plug-in hybrid technology as well as a sleeker look and more kit on board.

The new models from the French car maker will be on sale in the summer and will feature a new R.S. Line trim as well as a modified interior.

The car sees the introduction of Renault’s E-TECH hybrid system in its medium-sized family model which uses a 160hp powertrain that includes a 1.6-litre petrol engine and two electric motors.

Renault says it can travel up to 40 miles in pure electric mode and overall has emissions as low as 40g/km which equates to a theoretical 163mpg. The plug-in powertrain will initially be available only in the Megane Sport Tourer estate before being fitted to hatchback models later.

Other engines in the line-up are a 1.3-litre petrol developing 140hp and a 1.5-litre diesel with 115hp on tap and both will be available either with six-speed manual or seven-speed EDC automatic transmissions.

Inside, the latest Megane has a new 9.3in screen for the multimedia system and a 10-inch digital instrument cluster with Renault’s EASYLINK multimedia system that now comes with the option of a semi-automated driving mode.

All models in the new range also have ultra-bright LED headlights to improve visibility. Other changes include redesigned front bumper, dynamic air deflectors around the wheel arches to improve aerodynamics and more pronounced wings which give the car a more slithery appearance.

Dynamic indicators are another new feature while R.S. Line trim  - which replace GT Line models – have sportier body kit including the F1 blade design from the hot Megane R.S and a honeycomb front grille.

Renault says the new Megane will be available from July, with prices still to be confirmed. The current range starts from £17,995 for the hatch and £19,295 for the Sport Tourer.
