As Germany's election draws near, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) has emerged as a potential headline-grabber alongside the far right. Founded in 2024 by Sahra Wagenknecht, a former Left Party lawmaker known for her leftist views, the BSW has garnered attention for its unique positioning in the political landscape.
Wagenknecht, who labels herself a 'conservative leftist,' has taken the unconventional step of naming the party after herself, leveraging her personal brand to attract supporters. The BSW has found backing from former Left Party members and even some disaffected followers of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), particularly in Germany's eastern regions.
On economic matters, the BSW aligns with traditional left-wing principles, advocating for job security and higher wages. However, its stance on immigration mirrors that of the AfD, leading to policy overlaps between the two parties. Despite this, the BSW has publicly stated its refusal to collaborate with the AfD, emphasizing its distinct political identity.
Notably, the BSW has called for a cessation of arms shipments to Ukraine and espouses a pro-Russia stance, setting it apart from mainstream German politics. With ambitions to secure at least 5% of the vote in the upcoming election, the BSW aims to secure a parliamentary presence and challenge the established political order.
