New public art trail of globe sculptures is coming to Swansea city centre

A trail of large globes will be set up in Swansea city centre this summer as part of a new project aimed at taking people on a "journey of discovery". The "World Reimagined Project" is taking place from August 13 to October 31 at seven UK cities, including Swansea and Liverpool, and each will host a free public art trail of globes around their city centres.

The globes have each been designed and created by a different independent artist and each responds to a different theme. It's hoped the trail of globes will encourage people to think about their history and support the work of community activists and organisations.

The project, supported locally by Swansea Council, will bring people, families and communities together "to talk about how we understand our history, how our past shapes our future and how we can act for social change."

Organisers explained: "The World Reimagined is a ground-breaking, vibrant art education project to transform how we understand the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans and its impact on all of us so that we can make racial justice a reality, together. Supported by Official Presenting Partner SKY, the project will see a trail of large Globe sculptures across seven cities including: Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool City Region, London, and Swansea.

"From 13 August to 31 October 2022, the globes will be displayed across these cities, inspiring and galvanising communities to better understand what it means to be Black and British. Bringing to life the reality and impact of the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans by remembering the past, whilst still moving forward - celebrating the spirit and culture that has endured so much suffering.

"The trails are being delivered in partnership with global public art producers, Wild in Art, who have a proven track record of creating world-class events which entertain, enrich, inform, and leave a legacy. Previous work includes the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic mascot trail, the award-winning Bee in the City in Manchester, and Rockets around Leicester. The trails are at the centre of learning, community and heritage programmes that invite everyone to take part: www.theworldreimagined.org/ "

The exact locations the globes will be positioned in Swansea have not yet been confirmed, but they're expected to be dotted around the city centre and will be free to visit. You can get the biggest Swansea news stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

Swansea Council cabinet member Elliott King said: "The World Reimagined is creating opportunities for artists, local organisations, colleges, schools and communities across the city. They’re getting involved as practitioners, participants, facilitators and leaders – and in around a month their work will be enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors to the city centre.

"Our Swansea activity not only involves collaboration to create a unique arts trail across the city and its communities, but is stimulating conversations about who we are, how we got here and what racial justice means to Swansea.

"Everybody involved is really looking forward to seeing the globes in place and peoples’ reactions to them."
