New poll suggests five Greater Manchester Conservative MPs would lose their seats in General Election

The Conservatives would lose five seats in Greater Manchester if an election were held now, according to a new poll. The party has eight seats in the region, but would keep just three.

YouGov modelling suggests the Tories would lose all but three of 88 so-called “battleground” seats, including many of the 2019 Red Wall gains, if a general election were called. Among the seats predicted to swing to Labour are the high profile Conservative gains of Leigh and Heywood and Middleton.

Both traditional Labour heartlands, the constituencies turned blue in 2019 as Boris Johnson swept to a landslide election win. But pollsters predict that Sir Keir Starmer's party could reclaim both seats as the Prime Minister continues to be haunted by the cost of living crisis and the aftermath of Partygate.

MP for Bury North James Daly would also be out, along with Mark Logan, the MP for Bolton North East. Both were elected for the first time in 2019 with slim majorities of 105 and 378 respectively.

Polling suggests that Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservatives’ 1922 committee, could also lose his seat in Altrincham and Sale West. Sir Brady has represented the constituency since its creation in 1997.

Meanwhile, the Conservatives would also lose in Bury South, which the party won in 2019. However, the seat is currently held by Labour after MP Christian Wakeford defected from the Tories earlier this year.

The predicted outcome would leave the Conservatives with just Bolton West, Cheadle and Hazel Grove in Greater Manchester. The YouGov poll, which collated the results using 15,000 votes from across England between May 19 and May 27, makes bad reading for Boris Johnson.

The results would also see the Prime Minister's own Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat “likely fall” into Labour hands and Red Wall seats such as Blyth Valley and Stoke-on-Trent North also revert back to Sir Keir Starmer’s opposition outfit. Only Ashfield, Bassetlaw, and Dudley North would remain blue, according to YouGov.

However, the next general election is not scheduled for another two years, and the boundaries on which it will be fought are currently planned to change.
