As Vice President Kamala Harris gears up for a crucial debate with Donald Trump, the latest polls indicate a tight race with no clear leader emerging. While a recent New York Times poll shows Trump with a slight lead within the margin of error, other polls have shown varying results, with Harris leading by different margins. When averaging the polls, Harris maintains a narrow lead of about two points, emphasizing the competitiveness of the race.

Examining voter trust on key issues, a shift is evident compared to previous years. In 2021, voters favored Democrats by eight points on important issues, but the recent poll indicates a five-point lead for Trump over Harris. This change highlights a significant shift in voter perceptions regarding which candidate is more trusted on crucial matters.

Furthermore, the perception of risk associated with a Trump presidency has evolved over time. While a majority of voters currently view Trump as a risky choice, the percentage has decreased from 67% in 2016 to 54% now. In contrast, the perception of risk associated with Harris stands at 52%, similar to the current view of Trump. This suggests a potential opportunity for Harris to sway the 28% of voters who feel they need to learn more about her.

With the upcoming debate expected to be a pivotal moment in the campaign, Harris aims to address the concerns of voters who seek more information about her. As the race remains close and voter sentiments continue to fluctuate, the debate presents an opportunity for Harris to make a lasting impact and potentially win over undecided voters.
