Residents and road users near a Nottinghamshire town are invited to have their say on the designs for the new A46 bypass. It is hoped that the new multi-million pound road near Newark will tackle congestion on the crucial road.
National Highways plan to upgrade the stretch of single carriageway on the A46 between the Farndon and Winthorpe roundabouts, which is used on average by 17,000 drivers every day as the key trade corridor connecting the M5 with the Humber Ports. This proposed bypass would create a continuous dual carriageway from Lincoln to Warwick, which will ease congestion on the outskirts on the town.
It was announced in February 2022 that the preferred route for the bypass was Option 2 Modified, which included many of the suggestions contributed by residents in local communities. This preferred route will also see the bypass built further away from the nearby village of Winthorpe.

Over the last few months more discussions have taken place to help National Highways better shape designs to upgrade the road, and a public consultation will be launched on the latest design, running from Wednesday, October 26 until Monday, December 12. There has been concerns raised previously over the bypass, but many residents now look forward to the improvement to the area, with work expected to begin in 2025.
National Highways Senior Project Manager, Phil Boffey, said: "We know how important this upgrade is for local communities and businesses as well as the national transport situation. It will bring safer and more reliable journeys and tackle the congestion currently experienced on this busy stretch, which is only going to increase in the coming years if we don’t take action.
“But it is very important to us that the views of road users and local communities are fully considered in the delivery of this scheme. We want insight from people on the potential impact our scheme may have on their journeys and their communities.
“I would urge people to come along to our events to find out more about the plans or visit the website and give us that essential feedback as we move forward with this important scheme.” Skanska has been awarded the contract to deliver the bypass, and design partner Mott MacDonald will undertake the design and construction of the scheme.
The proposals for the design include a flyover junction at Cattle Market with the A46 elevated to pass over the roundabout, which will separate through traffic from local traffic to improve safety for all road users. It is also proposed that the Winthorpe roundabout is enlarged to a five arm roundabout with traffic lights to connect the new link, and for traffic lights to be added to the Farndon junction to improve the flow of traffic during peak hours.
Other proposals include a new single lane carriageway between Friendly Farmer and Winthorpe roundabouts providing links to the A17, A1 and Newark, and a short section of new dual carriageway over the A1, including slip roads to Brownhills roundabout and a new bridge to the north of the existing A46 bridge over the A1.
