Commercial airplanes may soon be breaking the sound barrier again, almost 20 years after the last Concorde flight.
US aviation company Boom Supersonic has unveiled concept art for its new ‘Overture’ aircraft, a jet that will be “the world’s fastest airliner,” according to a promotional video posted on the company’s website.
Expected to make its first commercial flight in 2029, the new supersonic jet is predicted to be twice as fast as today’s airliners when flying over water and 20% faster over land.

That would mean a transatlantic flight from London to New York would take just three and a half hours.
"Overture is revolutionary in its design, and it will fundamentally change how we think about distance,” said Boom Supersonic CEO Blake Scholl in a statement.
"Aviation has not seen a giant leap in decades,” he said.
This may not be the transport revolution for everyone, however, as the Overture is only expected to carry 65 to 80 passengers.
After millions of hours of simulations, wind tunnel tests and over 50 different design iterations, the aircraft is now scheduled to go into production in 2024.
The company has also partnered with military contractor Northrup Grumman to develop military and emergency rescue aircraft using the new high-speed design.
