New parents reveal the highs and lows of their first year

The first year of parenting a new baby for new parents and carers is a total rollercoaster, according to new research, from getting excited about the first “smile” that’s actually trapped wind to managing unexpected “poonami” explosions. A new study by Heinz Family has identified some of the biggest everyday challenges new parents and carers face in that crazy first year, including:

  • Lack of sleep (45%)
  • Lack of me-time (34%)
  • Juggling household chores alongside baby care (33%)
  • Worrying about money (32%)

The research by Heinz Family has also identified the top new parenting milestones parents and carers tackle in their first year, which include:

  • Nodding and smiling while receiving unwanted baby advice (45%)
  • The first time you got five hours’ uninterrupted sleep (42%)
  • The first public ‘poonami’ (38%)

Nearly three in four parents and carers (72%) said that bonding with their new baby brought them the most joy, while 71% said it was all about seeing their baby grow and develop new skills. When it comes to the best thing about weaning, over half (52%) of new parents said it was seeing their baby enjoy good food, followed by seeing their child grow and develop (46%), seeing them have fun with food (43%) and being entertained by their funny reactions to food (36%).

It’s moments like these from a parent’s first year – from joyful and hilarious to unforgettable and downright messy – that have inspired Heinz Family and Moonpig to create an exclusive collection of cards for new parents.

The new card range by Heinz Family in partnership with Moonpig features seven unique designs, each depicting a funny, heartwarming or challenging parenting situation. From the first “poonami” to food fights at dinner time, they showcase some of the real-life moments new parents and carers can expect to enjoy with their bundle of joy.

Manya Gupta, Marketing Executive for Heinz Family, said: “Our first ever card collection celebrates the messy reality of new parenting, and we know that many new parents and carers will be able to relate, because let’s face it, there’s no such thing as perfection when it comes to new parenthood. We hope our cards will bring new parents joy and show them that they’re not alone and we’re all in it together.”
