New Orleans Pelicans could trade up for Scoot Henderson in major NBA Draft upset

The New Orleans Pelicans could be preparing for a huge move to go up in the draft to select explosive point guard Scoot Henderson.

The 19-year-old shone in the NBA G-League this season with much debate whether he or Alabama 's Brandon Miller will go second in the draft, behind French wonderkid Victor Wembanyama. It's a pick currently occupied by the Charlotte Hornets, with many expecting them to take Miller while already having their long-term answer at point guard in LaMelo Ball on the roster.

And should Henderson fall to the third pick, the Pelicans might make the move up from 14 to secure their leader of the future. NBA insider Shams Charania stated that the Pels are expected to 'aggressively pursue Henderson in the draft - which could see them give up a number of assets to do.

The team still holds first round picks from the Los Angeles Lakers after the Anthony Davis trade which they could include to secure a deal, as well as picks they acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks after trading away Jrue Holiday.

The Portland Trial Blazers currently holding the third pick. The Blazers may be looking to trade out, while having Damian Lillard at the position. Henderson had been seen as a potential contender to be picked first overall prior to the season, but Wembanyama's impressive year in France will undoubtedly see him go first to the San Antonio Spurs.

But Henderson would not be a bad consolation for a team drafting second or third. Standing at just 6'2, Henderson plays above his heights with his explosive traits - scoring 17.6 points and pulling down five rebounds a game in the G-League.

After a promising start to the season, the Pelicans had one of the worst records in the NBA in January and February, which saw them eventually lose their spot in the playoffs and lost in the play-in tournament. While it was disappointing, their season was marred by Williamson playing just 29 games as he continues to struggle with injuries.

Williamson has been on the end of criticism in recent weeks after missing significant time once again this season through injury, as he surprisingly warmed up for the all important play-in game and even performed a windmill dunk, but did not suit up to play and saw his team lose.

A generational talent, the Pels future success will depend on Williamson's health, but adding Henderson along side him would bring a huge boost.
