In case you missed our first feature, New on Steam is a feature series that focuses on the newest releases on Steam. Each feature will tell you all the game basics and what you need to know before you decide whether or not you'll buy the game.
Last time, we featured a noir dystopian thriller set in New York far into the future. Year 2329, to be exact. Today, what we have for you is a game that's all about investigating and solving crimes, including murder and cyberattacks.
What's new on Steam? It's none other than The Operator.
New on Steam: The Operator
The Operator was released on July 22, 2024. It is an atmospheric detective game developed by Bureau 81 and published by Bureau 81 and indienova.
In this game, you take on the role of the newest operator of the FDI, and your task is to assist field agents in the investigation of mysterious crimes. At your disposable is the FDI Software, which lets you analyze evidence and find clues that can help solve the case.
Field agents will call you when they need your help. Your task is to fact-check, search databases, and even identify murderers.
Murders, cyberattacks, and missing persons are just some of the cases you'll have to solve in this game. You'll need to pay close attention to clues, solve puzzles, and figure out what happened.
System Requirements
The following are the minimum Windows system requirements for The Operator:
- OS: Windows 7
- Processor: Intel i5 or equivalent
- Memory: 4 GB RAM
- Graphics: GTX 970
- DirectX: Version 9.0
- Storage: 3 GB available space
It should be noted, however, that beginning January 1, 2024, only Windows 10 and later versions are being supported by the Steam Client.
For macOS users, the following are the minimum system requirements:
- OS: High Sierra 10.13+
- Processor: Apple M1
- Memory: 4 GB RAM
- Graphics: Apple M1
- Storage: 3 GB available space
Lastly, here are the minimum system requirements for SteamOS + Linux
- OS: Ubuntu 16.04
- Processor: Intel i5 or equivalent
- Memory: 4 GB RAM
- Graphics: GTX 970
- Storage: 3 GB available space
Early Steam Reviews
The Operator, as of press time, has "Very Positive" reviews on Steam, according to the platform.
"Despite its three to four-hour length, this game is nothing short of a fantastic achievement in gaming," a user named The Gunslinger said in a Steam review.
"The gameplay is engaging, the story is enthralling, and the whole package is very polished from the voice acting to the sound design to the game's soundtrack," The Gunslinger added.
"The Operator offers an unforgettable experience despite its 4-hour length and lack of replayability," a user named Ozone said in a separate review. "The game is linear, so don't expect many choices, but the story is compelling, and the immersive audio elevates the experience with dynamic music and exceptional voice acting."
